environmental radiation surveys

Staff from Aurora have for many years been heavily involved in providing health physics support to contaminated land management and radiological surveying of buildings prior to remediation, refurbishment or demolition.

The particular roles taken by Aurora’s RPAs and Health Physicists in contaminated land and buildings management have been numerous and have included:

• Design of radiation safety aspects of planned operations.
• Project RPA.
• Application of the Data Quality Objectives (DQO) process to the assessment and remediation of
radiologically contaminated facilities.
• Management and control of Health Physics Surveyors.
• Selection of radiation protection instrumentation.
• Design of surveys and setting of clearance levels.
• Design and operation of RadSurveys (see below).
• Advice on disposal routes for radioactive waste.
• Liaison with regulators and other officials.
• Liaison with public, if required.
• Interpretation of results and findings.
• Design and implementation of dosimetry regimes.

In addition to providing RPA services, Aurora have an excellent track record of providing high quality health physics personnel and radiological protection equipment to contaminated land and facilities projects in the UK. In particular, we have recently developed a mobile gamma spectrometry system linked to a graphical interface system and spatial positioning technology to allow us to produce highly detailed gamma radiation maps of areas under investigation. The fact that it is a spectrometry system allows for low limits of detection to be achieved along with radionuclide specific analysis of land. The system is called RadSurvey and further details can be seen on the RadSurvey page.
